The metal spinning technique has a long tradition in German industry. Metal spinning is an extremely economical process in particular for the production of seamless and thin-walled hollow bodies and half-shells. The German firm of Rübsamen has specialised in this method of cold forming, and supplies high-quality formed sheet metal parts to customers throughout the whole of Europe.
Germany/ Bad Marienberg, November 2009. – Millions of sheet metal parts are produced every year in the heart of the German Westerwald, which has been the home of the supplier business Rübsamen since the beginning of the 1960's. This family company is a specialist in the production of high-quality formed parts manufactured from steel plate, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, brass, tin and pure zinc. Rübsamen is one of the few remaining companies using the now rare forming process of metal spinning, which is ideally suited to the cost-effective production of rotationally symmetrical hollow bodies.

Metal spinning is one of the techniques of cold forming, and is therefore a very energy-efficient forming process, which simultaneously allows great strengths to be achieved. In comparison with other forming techniques, metal spinning is also very economical, since it involves no costs for the production of complex moulding tools. For this reason, the process is particularly suitable for the production of small and medium-sized runs.

Light construction solutions also possible

Metal spinning enables the production of seamless and high-strength hollow bodies and half-shells, which achieve high service life. Since spun formed parts can also be produced with very thin walls, this also affords the possibility of realising weight-optimised light construction solutions. These economical and technical advantages of the metal spinning technique have now been rediscovered by many sectors of industry. Rübsamen for example produces housings, shieldings and cylinders for energy and climate technology, pressure vessels and reaction vessels for chemicals and fluid technology and appliance covers for medical technology in many different geometries and dimensions. This medium-sized company also produces heat-resistant fireproof products for smelting technology and elegant designer products for the lighting industry. Even large components for the manufacture of construction and agricultural machinery are spun accurately into the right shape here in Bad Marienberg.

At Rübsamen, the production of formed parts is usually carried out on fully automatic CNC metal spinning machines, in which sheets of steel and stainless steel, aluminium, copper and brass are shaped with extreme precision. Polished and painted, and fitted with connections, holders, valves or other fittings, the components then go direct onto customers' assembly lines.

In many cases, the company, which is certified to DIN ISO 9001, is also involved in the development work of manufacturers. With its own tooling construction, a CAD department equipped with the very latest computer technology and its many years of experience in the field of non-cutting metal machining, Rübsamen is able to assist the customer along the path to the optimum component from the very beginning. Another plus point: The range of capabilities of the company also offers the technological alternative of deep-drawing, enabling the best possible solution to be obtained, depending on the complexity of the forming, by the combination of the forming processes of spinning plus deep-drawing, or vice versa.
